Counselor's Corner
Instructor: Ms. Portu

Vision Statement:

The school counseling program will promote the all around well being of the students at Swans Creek Elementary.

Mission Statement:

Through a comprehensive and developmental approach school counselors work with students to develop educational, career, and personal/social skills that help each child to be a quality student.  The school counseling program is proactive and preventative in nature.  Through collaborating with teachers and consulting with other staff members, counselors work to eliminate the barriers that keep children from reaching their full potential.

Philosophy:

The counselors at Swans Creek Elementary believe that all students have the potential to achieve and be successful individuals.  We believe that all members of the Swans Creek Community have the right to learn and work in a positive and respectful environment where they are treated with the dignity and respect that they deserve.  In addition, all students have the right to participate in school counseling services.

The Swans Creek School Counseling program is:

·        An integral part of the total educational program.

·        Based on the standards and requirements of the American School Counselor Association, Commonwealth of Virginia, and Prince William County Schools.

·        Comprehensive in scope, preventative in design, and developmental in nature.

·        Committed to working with teacher, parents, and administrators to monitor the academic, social, and personal success.

What do school counselors do?
School counselors help students to reach their maximum potential.  We teach lessons and work with children in the areas of academic, career, and social development.  School counselors meet with children in the following ways.

Classroom Guidance:  School counselors meet with each class multiple times throughout the school year.  Lessons are taught following the Prince William County Schools School Counseling Curriculum.

Counseling Groups:  Students are able to participate in counseling groups with the school counselor.  Groups that are run on a regular basis help students with self-esteem, social skills, organizational skills, anger management, and friendship.  Counseling groups are available to all students and may be requested by the student, parent, or teacher.  Parental permission is required to participate.

Individual Counseling:  Students can meet with counselors on an individual basis when needed.  This can be requested by students, teachers, or parents.

Bullybuster Theme of the Week
This week our bullybuster theme of the week is to not exclude other.  By making sure that we are not excluding others we are including people and helping them to feel a part of the school community.  Show others you care and look out for others who may feel excluded today!
